exploitation

It is the first day back to school for millions of families, teachers and students alike. In my nagging dread about going back to work after the luxury of a year with my little one, that day has finally arrived. My year of magical thinking has come to an end. I realize just how overtired and overworked I had been just before my lil' peanut made her debut, and how I don't want to have anything to do with that frame of mind. My family has become a shield for the risks of not having boundaries.

But why do leaders (senior faculty, admin, the System with a capital S) let it get to that point? Why is the profession of teacher so synonymous with burn-out? What structural solutions could support the low-level worker in this job that can seem so cushy and privileged (think free summers, excess vacation, a work day that ends at 3pm, etc) but ends up being the complete opposite? What could be different to make this Monday morning less painful for millions of people?
