Earth Day

Earth, you beautiful, gorgeous globe. Today is Earth Day, one of my favorite days of the year, and one thing keeping me up at night is worrying about the state of our planet thanks to the UN report, the news, and Bill McKibben. In life it seems there are so very many things to worry about, from the minutiae of managing daily schedules to long-term life goals like traveling, saving for retirement, and caring for aging parents. One of the hardest things for me about the state of our earth is that I feel so powerless as only one person to do anything meaningful to impact or change it. Will it really remain if we keep doing nothing to change our misuse and abuse of natural resources?

"After you have exhausted what there is in business, politics, conviviality, love, and so on-- have found that none of these finally satisfy, or permanently wear-- what remains? Nature remains; to bring about from their torpid recesses, the affinities of a man or woman, with the open air, the trees, feels, the changes of seasons--the sun by day and the stars of heaven by night." (Walt Whitman)
