wearable calligraphy

I just love these calligraphic necklaces,
and reading the stories behind them makes them sweet,
so much so that I am inspired to get back into calligraphy this summer.

My girlfriend is moving in with me this month. My bedroom is painted very light, with white curtains and white bedding. She’s used to a much darker bedroom and when she’s with me she ends up using an eye mask to keep all that light out so she can sleep in the morning. When she wakes up, she pulls the mask up on one side so that she can see what’s going on – she looks a little like a very sleepy pirate. So, I started calling her “pirate”, and that got shortened to “pie” (which is also short for cutie-pie and sweetie-pie, obviously. And also the best dessert ever).

“Right from the Start” is a lyric from a love song my husband wrote for me for Valentine’s Day in 2003. He was still in school and money was tight, so we agreed not to exchange gifts. He teased me that he had a special gift for me that didn’t cost anything, and I told my work buddies in an effort to guess what the gift might be. That night he got out his guitar as usual and then looked at me and said, “I have a song for you” and started to sing. This song is campy and cheery, not his usual style, and for many years he was a little shy about the song. Since that Valentine’s, he has privately performed countless requests and surprised me with birthday and Valentine’s Day serenades. When I saw the calligraphy necklaces, I thought of the song and asked my husband if he liked the idea, unsure of what he would say. He was flattered and leaped at the chance to buy the necklace for my birthday…my big 34! I love wearing it. I get tons of complements and I love telling the story. He is very proud that I tell the story, but is still too shy perform it publicly. But if you catch me alone, I will sing it to you.
