nature's knowing

As cold temperatures arrive in the Smokies, keep your eye out for Rhododendron. This evergreen plant keeps its leaves all year and functions like a natural thermometer with leaves that droop when temperatures drop below freezing. This change in leaf or flower position based on temperature is called thermonasty, and can be seen in a variety of species. On your next hike in the park, remember to look for the Rhododendron droop to know if you will need that extra scarf!
