the youngest represented in a greeting

This has stuck with me this week with the political disaster of immigration policy and my reoccurring worry about education in this country.

On the border crisis: “I once heard a story about the Maasai tribe in Africa who would greet each other with ‘Kasserian Ingera,’ meaning, ‘And how are the children?’ stemming from the belief that if the children, the youngest and most vulnerable, are not well then the entire tribe is not well. I keep thinking of this and how we could answer if we were asked today.”
