the giant

Apparently the tallest tree in the Redwoods has been trumped by a secret tree.

I remember seeing this picture in National Geographic a few years ago.
The ever-curious Robert Krulwich brought it up recently in light of the news of an even bigger tree,
called the Hyperion.

This one pictured, the Stratosphere Giant, is twice the size of the Statue of Liberty,
369 feet high,
its mass is equivalent to 15 blue whales,
it produces enough new wood to make a 90-foot tall tree every year.

What an incredible piece of nature!

I love this poem by Bill Yakes:

Trees are our lungs turned inside out
& inhale our visible chilled breath.
Our lungs are trees turned inside out
& inhale their clear exhalations.
