We had the very first snow yesterday. I had to leave the house at 7:30, the last day before the time change. So it was very dark. I drove up the street in the freezing cold into these gigantic puffballs of snow, and it felt magical. Just like in one of my favorite childhood stories, Guk mal, Madita, es schneit! It was beautiful.

I have been fascinated with this perfumer (aka Nez, fr. for nose), Christopher Brosius, whose website is called, I hate perfume. His sents include In the Library, I am a Dandelion, the Beautifule Laundrette, Soaked Earth, Burnt Wood, Wildflower Honey, Gathering Apples, November. I would love to try any one of these, but this one caught my eye: Walking in the Air. It replicates the smell of snow. I love his approach to smells, and reading about his creative process. Maybe he seems so sympatisch because of his unabashed love of books. Whatever the case, I am smitten.

"One day, in November 2007 when it was unseasonably warm, I found myself longing for the smell of Snow. Not on me but in the air around me in my studio. I wanted to imagine myself working quietly in the middle of a snow covered pine forest - rather like the ending of the first act of Balanchine's Nutcracker...
So I made up a bottle of Snow-scented Home Spray.
Narnia in the Winter, the Waltz of the Snowflakes, or perhaps just the fond memories of Snow Days away from School, the smell of Snow is one of the most beautiful things I can think of..."
